But here's where it gets controversial... Tandy has acknowledged the need for a specialist defence coach and plans to bring one on board by the summer. However, the timing and process of this appointment have raised questions. Wales already has full-time attack and forwards coaches, but Tandy is relying on the temporary support of Dan Lydiate for defence, who is still early in his coaching career.
Sam Warburton, a former Wales captain, believes Tandy is spreading himself too thin, trying to juggle defence coaching with his head coach duties. He emphasizes the importance of having a dedicated defence coach who can provide full-time support, not just during campaign periods.
"It's not just about being a coach during a specific campaign," Warburton explains. "When players are with their clubs, the defence coach needs to be there, watching the regions play, keeping in touch, and sending clips. It's an ongoing process."
Alun Wyn Jones, another former Wales captain, agrees that Tandy should have a significant say in choosing his staff. "He needs to be able to pick his own team," Jones says. "He has a great understanding of defence, but he can't do it all alone."
