Sailing the World in a 10th-Century Viking Longboat: A Personal Journey
In the 1980s, as a teenager in Denmark, I embarked on a journey that would forever intertwine my life with the world of Vikings. My older brother, with his driving skills, took me to Roskilde, a city with a rich maritime history, where five original Viking ships were preserved. This visit sparked a passion that led me to volunteer at the Viking Ship Museum of Roskilde, where we began building one of the first replicas of a 10th-century Viking longboat.
Fast forward to my retirement, and I found myself volunteering for the Oseberg Viking Heritage Foundation in Tønsberg, Norway. Here, I had the opportunity to chair the foundation and contribute to the construction of the Saga Farmann, a 20-meter-long replica of the Viking Klåstad ship, excavated in 1970 from a farmer's field. Archaeologists dated it back to AD998, revealing it as a trading vessel.
The construction process was a meticulous and time-consuming endeavor. We employed traditional Viking methods, chopping wood with axes and building with replica tools. Our blacksmith crafted thousands of rivets, one by one, showcasing the craftsmanship of the past. Despite the challenges, we aimed to demonstrate how Vikings built their ships.
The Saga Farmann's maiden voyage began in April 2023, sailing from Tønsberg to Istanbul, a route reminiscent of Viking trading expeditions. I joined the crew for two weeks, sharing the hardships of life on a wooden ship without a keel. The thick, heavy ropes and the constant need for muscle-intensive work made it a demanding experience. Yet, the satisfaction of employing ancient techniques was unparalleled, even if the Vikings would have found our incompetence amusing.
One memorable day, we navigated through a lightning storm, with the bolts hitting the sea instead of our wooden vessel. The fast water current and the feeling of flying over the waves added to the adventure. Crossing the Black Sea presented a unique challenge, requiring us to set sail at 2 am during the right conditions. A single large wave could have capsized us, but the ship's stability prevailed.
The final stretch of the journey was particularly memorable. After sailing for almost 24 hours into the Bosphorus Strait, we arrived in Istanbul, witnessing the full moon over the city's Bosphorus Bridge. Traveling 2,175 miles across Europe's waterways and seas, we celebrated our achievement, mirroring the Vikings' historic voyages.
Following our arrival in Istanbul, we decided to continue our journey, sailing around Croatia, Italy, France, and the UK. The ship's popularity grew, with crowds gathering to watch us pass through iconic locations like Tower Bridge in London. The crew formed strong bonds, and the experience taught me about the generosity of people.
I now spend between six and eight weeks a year on board the ship, managing logistics for the next voyage with my team. The rest of the time, I focus on keeping the ship afloat until we must return home. My passion for Viking history and sailing has driven me to continue this endeavor, and I look forward to the adventures that lie ahead.
This personal journey has been a testament to the power of historical reenactment and the enduring fascination with Viking culture. It has brought new friendships and a deeper understanding of the past, proving that the spirit of exploration and adventure is timeless.
