Mokulele, with its impressive 98% completion rate, is defending its role and seeking to retain federal subsidies. Louis Saint-Cyr, the airline's president, proudly highlights their performance, stating, "I would put our record against anyone's."
However, this is not the first time Lanai's commercial carrier has faced competition. In 2024, the U.S. Department of Transportation opened bids to other airlines after Mokulele requested federal funding. Since then, Mokulele has invested significantly in its Hawaii network, emphasizing its commitment to the island communities.
Supporting Mokulele's proposal are Isle State Sen. Lynn DeCoite and the Office of Hawaiian Affairs. On the other hand, Maui Mayor Richard Bissen, who backed Mokulele in the previous bid, has now shifted his support to Pacific Air Charters.
Pacific Air Charters, a charter company, is pursuing the routes after losing to Mokulele two years ago. If successful, it would mark the company's first venture into providing scheduled service. Kapukini Kalahiki, representing Pacific Air Charters, emphasizes their focus on offering an affordable, safe, and reliable option for Lanai's residents.
Another competitor, Cape Air, based in Massachusetts, has also entered the fray. Cape Air recently held a community meeting on Lanai, aiming to introduce themselves and their vision. Lanai resident Ross Morita sees this competition as a positive development, believing it will benefit the island.
The U.S. Department of Transportation is currently reviewing the proposals, with the new contract term set to begin on September 1st.
